SUSTAINIBILITY PROGRAM
The William H. Prescott Elementary School Green Team is supported by administrators, educators and parents within our school community. In particular, Mr. Ackerman, our Librarian/Wood Shop teacher and Sustainability Coordinator has been very instrumental in spearheading this endeavor.
OUR SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM:
- Provides enhancement of the school gardens
- Continuously create a strong support network of volunteers
- Continuously identify goals and aligns the garden to our curriculum
Educators, parents and the school community collectively partake in our Green Team gardening efforts. This continuous collaboration tremendously promotes and encourages school spirit and pride. We encourage engagement and promote our school gardens as a valuable education space that fosters positive health and wellness habits. The school gardens educate students about the importance of planning, planting, rebuilding and safe utilization on school grounds. Our goal is to continue to lay the foundation for long-term sustainability for our school community.
GREEN TEAM
The Green Team Ambassadors consist of grades 3-5 students who serve an integral role to The P.S. 93 Family. They are responsible students who show interest in school leadership and attend to many tasks. The ambassadors recycle in the cafeteria and classrooms by ensuring that items are disposed of in the appropriate receptacles. Some of our ambassadors read to our K-2 students. Additionally, they serve as leaders/chaperones for special assemblies and events. The Green Team Ambassadors also assist the librarian with book sale events and gardening on the school grounds. Gardening responsibilities entail planting bulbs to secure yearly flowers and the maintenance of indoor plants by ensuring they are properly watered weekly. Further, The Green Team Ambassadors have the opportunity to develop a range of skills such as communication, presentation and teamwork.
KIDS IN ACTION
The Kids Action Team is a weekly after-school youth service-learning program for students in grades K-3. Through research, action, and reflection on the topic of care for the environment our Kids in Action Team, Team Sustain, looks at ways to improve home and school recycling procedures. Team Sustain also examines waste management systems and ways to reuse recycled materials to create art.
